The first month of the New Year always seems to bring out the best of intentions for most of us and that is a good thing. It is a perfect time to look back over the past year and decide what we would like to change in our lives. Most likely, you are one of the 45% of Americans, who have decided to make a commitment to improve at least one area of your life in the coming year. Most commonly, the goals include: working to improve our appearance, attitude, to become more productive or to broaden your interests with a new hobby.

According to a study, recently published out of the University of Scranton, losing weight was the #1 resolution made. While that is not surprising, I am more pleased to see that staying fit and healthy came in at # 5, not too far behind. That is the category I hope most of you aspire to. If you’ve identified maintaining your health and fitness as the main motivator for your New Year’s resolution, I know that you are looking at the big picture. After all, good health is the basis for a pain free life.

What I love most about Sit and Be Fit is that it’s the perfect level of exercise to start anyone on the road to a lifetime of fitness. It all begins by turning on the television to the Sit and Be Fit program each day and joining me for 30 minutes of exercise that you’ll enjoy and will make your day! It’s free, there are no membership fees. You don’t have to get out of your house and catch a bus or drive to class. As a matter of fact, if you like, you can exercise in your pajamas! You see, there are no acceptable excuses for not exercising your way to good health.

The best way to stop functional decline is to make a date to meet me in class and enjoy our time together. Allow me to start you on the road to exercise success. I can’t think of a better way to begin 2013!

Here is some exciting news for those of you who are my exercise partners already. New shows, Season 13, are being released this month, so check your local listing to find them. If you find it easier to exercise at a different time of day with a DVD, you’ll be happy to hear that the entire Season 11 (10 shows) and Season 12 (20 shows) are now available. You’ll have a variety of movement at your fingertips.

Here is an exercise to get your day and year off to a good start. Before getting out of bed every morning;

  • bring both knees to your chest (hold under the knees) and circle them slowly three times in one direction and three times in the other direction.
  • Take a deep breath in and let it go with an audible sigh.

That was an easy exercise and it took less than a minute. That’s all we have time for in this Newsflash. Stay active and see you in class!
