SPINAL CORD CONDITIONS (PARAPLEGIA AND TETRAPLEGIA) AND EXERCISE
Paraplegia and Tetraplegia are forms of paralysis which occur after the spinal cord has been damaged by injury, infection, or by abnormal spine growth. Individuals with Paraplegia and Tetraplegia commonly experience a reduced range of motion and decreased sensation in certain areas of their bodies. Although it cannot cure Paraplegia and Tetraplegia, exercise can greatly improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from these and other spinal cord conditions.
Exercise is extremely beneficial and important to those managing a spinal cord conditions because it prevents secondary conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pressure sores, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Other secondary conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, urinary tract infections, and respiratory disease, can be successfully managed with exercise. Exercise prevents deconditioning and obesity and provides psychological and/or recreational benefits.
